Book Review: It's Getting Scot in Here by Suzanne Enoch

It's Getting Scot in Here... FOR REAL, Y'ALL! Suzanne Enoch has this amazing ability to transport you to any era and in It's Getting Scott in Here she transports us from Scotland to London and we get to LIVE through her characters as they navigate their turbulent situation.

This is definitely a Wrong Guy, Right Brother deal. When the MacTaggert boys find out that their dad made an agreement with their estranged mother, they are furious, but they have to swallow that down and head out of the Highlands into the wilds of LONDON. Talk about your culture shock. They definitely had a lot misconceptions over the city as well as the women of England.

And in comes Amelia-Rose Baxter. She definitely sets the MacTaggert boys on arse over heels. They definitely did NOT expect her. She is promised to the eldest brother, but marriage is the last thing Amelia-Rose thinks of when she meets the big man who dismisses her and once she verbally slaps him, he is DONE.

But Niall sees something special in her. And we get to watch as their relationship builds. This is something that Suzanne does extremely well. She builds a romance for you, this isn't a wam-bam-thank you ma'am story, this is the true definition of a love story. You watch the ups and downs as their relationship takes form and blossoms.

I will say that I had some problems at times liking the MacTaggert men. They are supposed to be rough highlanders, but I felt they were just spoiled and it was hard for me to get on board with the men. I loved Amelia-Rose though, she sold the story. I loved her outspokenness and how Suzanne Enoch let her character take control when it was needed. I do recommend the book if you love a strong heroine who doesn't simper and whine through the whole thing. This is book 1 in The Wild Wicked Highlanders and I will stick with the series to watch each man fall under the spell of their perfect match.

Smutty Little Secrets by Vivienne Hunt

First of all, let me say Smutty Little Secrets by Vivienne Hunt is an in your face erotic novel. It makes no apologies for what it is and the story is fast, hot and loud. When I picked it up at the When the Heart Dreams reader and author mixer last weekend I knew it would be a quick read, but I hadn't read anything from this author before. I always look for new and exciting work, so I happy to dive into this story.

Nikki is a character that a lot of women will jive with, she's in a verbally abusive relationship and definitely needs to find happiness. From the first word on the first page you are given a no holds barred look into what Nikki needs...and wants. She finds what she's looking for in the arms of her brother-in-law, Jason, and his wife, Cassandra. (Yes, I KNOW! Cassandra is my name, too. lol)

I love work that is quick paced and flows. I read the book in one sitting and I must say I did enjoy the sexy romp. I would have liked a bit more development of Jason and Cassandra, I want to know what makes them tick. I'm a people watcher so I know that about myself. Nikki falls for Cassandra and Jason pretty fast and pretty hard, taking the relationship to the highest peak from 0 to 60 pretty quickly.

But it's more than that. It's more than a love story and hot sex between two females and a male. It's about a woman finding her voice between the sheets. It's about self-discovery and self-worth. This story is all female power from beginning to end. Nikki finds that Cassandra is the woman she longs to be like. Wild, free and intoxicating. She molds herself into that person that under Cassandra's tutelage. I fully believe if the story had been a bit longer we would see Nikki fully bloom as a force to be reckoned with, and we get a glimpse of that in the epilogue. I would love to see a part two.

The book had me on the edge through each page, as I said it was a quick read so it's perfect for a sick day or a "Me Day".

When the Heart Dreams Mixer in Charlotte, NC February 11th, 2017

I was PRIVILEGED to win a pair of tickets to When the Heart Dreams, an author/reader mixer that was held on Feb. 11th here in Charlotte, NC. I entered the contest last week, I honestly didn't think I'd win, but I did and IT WAS AWESOME. You can read my entry here. I won two tickets which were about $150 each, but I couldn't find anyone to go with me, so I went alone. 

I arrived just a little after 10 am and signed in. I was given a badge and a "Swag" bag. Not many people where there when I arrived which surprised me. I immediately found a little seat in the corner, because I've been so sick lately and coughing up a storm. I didn't want to push it too far. My swag bag was pretty awesome. It contained two books, a plethora of book marks, a pen, a notepad and and a calendar.

The first panel discussion was held by Kianna Alexander. It was pretty much just industry discussion and Q&A. which lasted a little over an hour. I did buy a few raffle tickets, it was for a good cause which is near and dear to my heart. At my table during that panel, four authors sat there, I was so excited! Apparently, I'm funny.

Once that was completed there was about a 30 minute interval, BATHROOM BREAK! During the first panel I met a lovely lady named Lee Ann, she helped me find the bathroom, she really is very sweet and I enjoyed talking with her. Not the bathroom in this hotel was swanky. They had real towels and "bath salt" hand cleanser. I used the regular liquid and paper towels. I'm not fancy like that.

After the bathroom break, we had lunch, which was VERY fancy, it had some interesting flavors and the cheesecake was divine. Here are a view photos for you!

After lunch there were two more panels, one was Food and Love hosted by Andria Gaskins which so SO funny. I enjoyed watching her talk, she has a natural comedic bend that I love and she is definitely a story teller. The stories she has about her mom are great and you can tell she is exactly as she portrays herself to be. She is so down to earth.

The second was a Plotting panel hosted by Karen Witemeyer. She is so very sweet! I had met her earlier in the day while talking with my new found friend Lee Ann. Lee An was a huge fan of hers, and I can see why! She is so very sweet and the covers of her books are BEAUTIFUL. I loved meeting her and I picked up a book of hers to go with the one that was in my swag bag! I enjoyed our panel and our little group wrote a story about a man named Cash Murdoch. How perfect is that name? Our groups theme was small town, it had to include a prize winning pig (we named her Cat) and a teacher named Daffadil Wilson (we called her Daffy for short). It was fun and there were lots of M&M's to be eaten, which I did.

At this point they did the drawing. I had bought 5 tickets originally so I wasn't really planning on winning anything but I won TWO gift baskets. The first one was a giant basket by an author I'm not familiar with named E.E. St. Ores. I haven't been able to find anything about this author but there is a release party on March 3rd, I may try to go to that so I can meet the author! I also plan on reviewing the book that was in the basket. It contained a bunch of Hawaiian themed food which is fun. The second thing I was was a bag from Emma Long! She had put in two signed books, a digital copy of another book I can redeem, and some fun swag. Lee Ann won the same bag so we were both pretty happy with that. Later on as I was flipping through the books a $5 Amazon gift card fell out. How awesome is Emma?

On to lunch! Lunch was a very fancy affair with three courses. I was sat at table #1 with Elizabeth Michels! I was so happy to be sitting at her table, she is a very cool hostess and has a very infectious laugh. I enjoyed myself greatly. There was a quick panel as we waited for lunch to be served and Sabrina Jeffries, Andria Gaskins and Karen Witemeyer answered questions that Elizabeth put forth to them. They are each such different individuals that it was pretty interesting to hear their answers.

Once lunch was served we had a "mad libs" type of task that each of the 8 tables participated in. Each one got a different sub-genre and our table got Erotica. I know, ironic right? I was SHY. I wanted to say the things that came into my head but I didn't want to get looks so I kept most of what I wanted to say to myself.

After another two our interval came the book signing and party. We were told it was "heavy hors d'oeuvres" but I wasn't sure what that meant until I got there. They had a bunch of little hand held foods you can eat like spanakopitas and little quesadillas. They also had rolls and a roasted turkey that a man was carving. Pretty awesome. I never did hit the dessert table but it looks like they had some great cupcakes. I met all the authors and spent time talking to a majority of them. I spoke with SABRINA JEFFRIES! I'm a huge fan of her work and was so excited to have been able to spend that time with her. She signed both of my books (one was in my swag bag and the other I purchased off the table). She is so nice and I love the story of how she became a writer. It gives me hope that I can do this myself.

I also spoke again with Karen (she was actually the first table I walked up to as she is so welcoming and inviting it's were I wanted to start!) She also signed two books for me and two post cards. One of the books was in my swag bag, I purchased another book and also picked up two of her post cards from the earlier Plotting panel. I plan on giving one of these bookmarks to my friend! The other...just stay tuned as I have an idea!

Also I met and spoke with Vivienne Hunt who was very nice and she told me about her books. I hadn't read anything from her before but I'm ALWAYS open to new authors. She had a little deal going at her table where if I bought one book, I'd get the second book for free (and it's an ARC) as well as a cute little goodie bag. I can't pass up a deal....so I took her up on it! She signed both books and a bookmark for me, so excited to read those! And I did speak with Andria Gaskins, sadly I didn't have her book, but I did ask that she sign a bookmark for me and the same with April Alieda and Cindy Holby. I'm hoping I can get autographed books from them and photos at the next event. I greatly enjoyed speaking to both of them as they were very insightful and talented women.

Next I spoke with Elizabeth Michels. She is so very nice (I know I'm saying everyone is nice but they really are!) She signed the book I bought off the table and a book mark for me. She said there was supposed to be a book in our swag bags but I didn't get one, bummer, I would have LOVED it.


Please keep in mind that through all of this I was meeting the great group of readers and some of the authors. I had a great conversation with April Alieda about the RT Convention when I am dying to go to in May. I have plans to be there

My Book Haul

I did get sick a few times. Wound up going back to the ER on Sunday, but it was worth it to meet all of these authors.

Now I'm thinking of starting a Book Blog to post reviews of books and so on, what do you think? This is kind of a "catch all" blog where everything kind of falls. I'm looking at going to a convention in Columbia in November and of course RT in May. This was so much fun I can see how it could be addicting.

Nora Roberts' Blood Brothers: A Spooky Review

I have been reading Nora Roberts books ever since I was about 14. I have read all her romances whether it be her contemporaries, her forays into historical and even the Harlequin novels. I have enjoyed most of her novels (there are a few that I didn't like but this isn't one of them). So I knew that Nora has a dark side to her, come on now we all do, but when I read through this novel it brought images of Stephen King, psychotic nightmares and the Grudge to mind. I mean come on there is a creepy kid running around with sharp teeth, long dark hair and red eyes. There is blood dripping out of trees instead of sap and people dancing while blood pours on them. One spooky ass read!

Now imagine me trying to sleep after that? It ain't happening!

This novel starts out innocent enough with three kids going camping in the woods to push the boundaries on their 10th birthday. (10 people, that means they were 9 when they went into the woods with beer!) So after you get beyond children drinking and smoking you get to the root of the problem, the kids opened up a portal and out came a demon who terrorizes the town every seven years on the seventh day of the seventh month. (July). People kill each other, people kill themselves, animals mysteriously die, people go chaotic. Kinda like an M. Night Shyamalan movie, only with love and sex scenes. Well this is book one, so it focuses on a writer named Quinn who comes to town to dig into the lore and legends and the mystery that is Cal's small town. (Cal was one of the kids, ok?) So we got grinning demons with their faces pressed against the windows and blood...good grief, don't get me started. Anyway, the two of course fall in love (it's a freakin' romance novel so don't act like I shocked you and ruined the end) but it cuts you off at the end and then you got to go scrambling for book 2 which is The Hollows. I have it somewhere in the house I know I bought it, no I just got to find it so I know what happens with Fox. (Fox is another boy, well...man now).

I will say this, Ms. Roberts scared the bejesus out of me and now I can't sleep so I'm writing about it here. I did enjoy the book, it was heavy in the spook factor and you couldn't help but like the characters, and feel sorry for others.

All Men Are Created Jerks and other Random Musings (BONUS Review)

Ah Mondays, don't you wish the weekends were longer and you can pack more stuff into them? I sure do. The way things have been going I'm behind on everything I wanted to do at the house, from painting to setting up rooms. I'll get there eventually but it's slow going.

So I finished Suzanne Enoch's Sins of a Duke. I enjoyed this book. Of course I've always liked my heroes forceful and in charge. I also enjoy a kick ass woman and this book had both. Sins of a Duke brings Sebastian Griffin, the Duke of Melbourne and Princess Josefina Katarina Embry in sights of one another. Princess Josefina is from South America (this is rare, usually I only come across Jamaica in a historical romance novel). Sebastian is the head of his family (duhhh, the duke) and when he is tasked by the Prince Regent to be the liaison between the Embrys and England. He is instantly attracted to Josefina and that really surprises him because he hasn't been attracted to anyone in the four years since his wife's death. He does have an adorable daughter who gives him advice on love (she's seven) so you have to enjoy a story where the man can be forceful one moment and then tender with a child the next. Anyway, the Embrys are in town to do two things, one is to gain a loan to help set up their newly founded country Costa Habichuela and two, to find a husband for Josefina.

The King of Costa Habichuela, Stephen Embry is an Englishman originally and requested Sebastian because he wanted to make a match there between Sebastian and Josefina. The only problem is that Sebastian really things that there is something wrong with the way the Embrys are describing Costa Habichuela. He starts to do some digging and definitely thinks that they are lying. Are they lying? No clue. I ain't telling you. But I will say that this is a continuation of The Griffin Family. The series starts out with Sin and Sensibility, followed by An Invitation to Sin and Something Sinful. I haven't read the others in the series but I did enjoy Sins of a Duke so much I am definitely going to go looking for them. You can read Chapter 1 at http://www.suzanneenoch.com/

Today at work is supposed to be S.T.A.R day and apparently we were supposed to come dressed up as a celebrity. I didn't get the memo till this morning so my celebrity is well. Me. Anyway, a drag queen just walked in. Go figure. I'll try to snag a photo later.

My head is throbbing today not so sure why, but it's probably a lack of sleep issue. Anyway I will be back later with a continuation of The Interview!
